When merging PDFs makes sense

Merging takes several separate PDF files and combines them into a single document, in the order you choose. This is useful in a lot of everyday situations:

• You wrote a report in sections and need to deliver it as one file
• You have multiple scanned documents and want them in a single archive
• An application requires supporting documents combined into one PDF
• You want to send a project proposal, NDA, and contract as a single attachment
• You scanned a double-sided document in two passes and need to combine the results

If you’re unsure whether to merge or keep files separate, a useful rule of thumb: if you’d want to reference them together, they probably belong in one document. If they’re unrelated, keep them separate.

Does the order of files matter?

What happens to the file size?

The merged file will typically be close to the combined size of the individual files. This is expected — merging doesn’t compress the content, it concatenates it.

If the resulting file is larger than you need, you can run it through the Compress tool afterward. The reduction will vary depending on the content, but text-heavy PDFs often shrink meaningfully.
