Two modes for splitting a PDF

The split tool works differently depending on whether you want control over exactly where the breaks happen, or just want the document divided evenly.

Manual mode: choose the split points yourself

In manual mode, you see thumbnails of all the pages and click to select which ones start a new file. This gives you precise control over how the document is divided — useful when your PDF has clear sections (chapters, form sets, reports) and you want to split at natural boundaries.

Auto mode: split by page count or equal parts

Auto mode handles the math for you. You can choose to:

• Split every N pages — for example, every 5 pages produces files of 5 pages each (the last file may be shorter if the total doesn’t divide evenly)
• Split into equal parts — divide the document into a specific number of roughly equal files

Auto mode is convenient for large documents where you want consistent batch sizes rather than specific content groupings.

How to split a PDF

1. 1 Open the Split tool at pdfdistrict.com/split/ and select your PDF.
2. 2 Choose a mode: in Manual mode, click thumbnails to select pages for each part; in Auto mode, enter the number of pages or parts you want.
3. 3 Click “Split PDF.” Each resulting file downloads automatically. Your original PDF is not modified.

Split vs. Extract: which one do you need?

Splitting divides the whole document into multiple files. If you only need a small selection of specific pages — not a division of the entire document — extracting those pages is simpler. The Extract tool lets you click exactly the pages you want and download just those as a single new PDF.
